Good afternoon,

As some of you may know, I was recently in Austin for the NACUBO 2019-20 Fellows Program, where I had the opportunity to discuss Operational Excellence and learn from the other participants. I’m very proud of the Operational Excellence work to date and want to thank everyone for your support. Please note that due to scheduling conflicts, the Steering Committee meeting scheduled for earlier this week was moved to August 5th. Here are the latest workstream updates:

  • The Travel & Expense Team continues to collect feedback on the new Travel & Expense website resources from the three pilot units: the Kenan-Flagler Business School, Undergraduate Admissions, and the Department of City and Regional Planning.
  • The HR Team’s student employment group continued to work on building out the structure of the new website and developing content to aid supervisors and hiring representatives in navigating the student employment process. The group focused on standard principle functions and successfully rolled out the HR principal functions on the Office of Human Resources website and are working on adding a new glossary of HR terms to the Hiring Playbook. The group is now shifting its focus to building out standard principle functions for IT positions.
  • The Research Team continued refining the pilot rollout of the federal playbook to 11 participating departments/units. The team also continued development of the second and third playbooks focused on award setup with industry and nonprofit sponsors.

The Hiring and Procurement Early Impact Work continues to be rolled out to the final cohort. This week the in-unit training sessions for procurement staff began alongside the war room training for both hiring and procurement. To date, the University has made nearly 350 hires and the average number of days to hire is now reduced to 44 days (about half of the baseline).  Additionally, when surveyed, 96% of respondents (44 total) reported that they were able to hire their top candidate.
