Good afternoon,

This week we want to highlight our support of the Graduate Student Experience (GSE) Initiative through advising and facilitation. I’m a member of the GSE Steering Committee and through those conversations, Beth Mayer-Davis, Dean of The Graduate School, and I saw the opportunity for Operational Excellence to support this campuswide initiative. John Easterbrook, executive director of strategic initiatives, is leading this student-focused project for The Graduate School. OE partnered with John on the GSE kickoff planning and supported the facilitation of the initial five working group breakout sessions. Since the GSE is balancing the implementation of short-term projects and the development of long-term recommendations to support our graduate and professional students, Beth and I agreed that ongoing OE advising engagement would be helpful. Every two weeks, John meets with Candace Reynolds, associate director for Operational Excellence, to talk through ideas and questions. “Candace and the OE team have provided crucial support to the GSE,” Easterbrook said. “Being able to workshop ideas and problem solve alongside Candace has enabled the GSE to work more efficiently and effectively in service of graduate and professional students at Carolina.”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to leverage the different tools in the OE toolbox to support the University’s important initiatives like the GSE.

Please feel free to share this email with your colleagues. You can also visit our website to learn more about Operational Excellence, read my previous updates, and submit feedback. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at wernoski@email.unc.edu. I read every email.
